Small and
locally owned businesses are the bridge to a more sustainable and just
society. They are the mainstay of our community's economy.
Our mission is to support and
protect local businesses by strengthening ordinances that control
development and keep out big-box stores.
It's
imperative that we as a community continue to support our local
businesses. Since the General Business
Overlay District was
passed it will greatly effect our local businesses. When the Big Box
retailers come to the Market Place on
Twenty-Two the net
effect will simply be shifting current local retailers into one "big
box". Our local businesses in general will suffer greatly and
possibly go out of business.
The General Business
Overlay District not only allowed for the rezoning of 113 acres on
the Buncher property for commercial
development, as originally requested by developer, but Council went even
further by including another 234 acres of residentially zoned land for
additional commercial development along routes 22 and 66.
Please support our
candidates for Murrysville Council on the Nov 3rd general elections. |
Local Business will be hurt by the Large Commercial Retailers
Not only do direct competitors suffers, but since local businesses tend to
support other local businesses, support businesses such as local banks,
attorneys, printers, web designers, suppliers, accountants, etc suffer as well.
Local businesses keep more of their profits within the community. The two
council developer incumbents seeking re-election have compromised our zoning
laws and the comprehensive
plan in order to fulfill self-serving needs by over commercializing
our community.
CPRM-PAC Supports Small
Business
Half
of CPRM’s governing board own small local businesses. In addition, we
shop locally. We do not think that over-commercialization and the entry of “big
box” stores is good for Murrysville.
The
Murrysville Economic and Community Development Corporation (MECDC) was created
to support the needs or area businesses. They have done a lot of good things
for local business owners, such the Flags Over Murrysville and the proposed
Streetscape project they were awarded, and we support this.
However,
we are concerned by signs that the organization is moving toward overt support
for some types of growth on a scale inconsistent with the interests of local
business and the desire of its citizens. We are concerned with talk about
“corridors of opportunity” for large malls and other retail clusters. We are
also concerned about MECDC’s role in promoting the
general business overlay and
Market Place on Twenty-Two.
We
don’t think that these things are good for the citizens of Murrysville, or for
our community’s small businesses.

Half of the CPRM-PAC governing are
small business owners in Murrysville.
